No team is more eager to etch its name into the state championship record books than the Brock Eagles. A true powerhouse, Brock has never experienced a losing season in program history. Yet despite their dominance, the Eagles have come up short in each of the past four years, falling in either the state semifinals or the championship game. This year, they’re determined to break through and finally get over the hump with a deep playoff run.

You’d think Brock would be rebuilding after graduating 23 seniors last season, but the Eagles will return a remarkable 22 seniors this fall. Among them is UTEP commit Colt Matlock, a dynamic two-way threat at wide receiver and defensive back. Matlock is coming off an 800-yard, 14-touchdown season and is expected to be a focal point of the offense once again.

At quarterback, Brock features a competitive battle between juniors Holt Frazier and Brayden Ray. Both have impressed throughout the offseason, and it’s likely they’ll split snaps during the regular season as the coaching staff looks for the hot hand.

Defensively, the Eagles will be anchored by a ferocious front line. Senior defensive end Caleb Holt, junior defensive tackle Waylon Winfrey, and senior defensive end Slade Mathis, the son of head coach Billy Mathis, form a physical core that will look to set the tone each week.

For Brock, it’s once again a championship-or-bust mentality. A focus for this season would be what they have been doing and that is to make a deep playoff push, but this time finish strong late in the postseason and bring back a title to Brock, Texas.
