Springtown Porcupines Lean on Skill and Toughness as Trenches Take Shape

For high school sports coaches, the season never really ends. Seniors graduate, and coaches are forced to find new playmakers to fill vacant spots. For Springtown head coach Brian Hulett, last year’s success only ensures more work and higher expectations.

Coach Hulett says that “identity starts up front.” Unfortunately, the Porcupines return only one offensive lineman and are “thin on the defensive line.” It can be hard for a high school team to adopt an identity, and “sometimes you don’t find that until Week 7 or 8,” Hulett said. Nevertheless, he believes a strong group of returning skill players on offense and defense can buy his men in the trenches a couple of weeks.

Junior quarterback Kaine Hill looks to add to his strong resume after totaling 3,000 all-purpose yards in his 2024 campaign. Meanwhile, the Porcupines created nearly 20 turnovers last season and look to do the same this year, with junior Rome Ewell helping lead the defensive attack. Hulett also does not shy away from playing guys both ways, as senior standouts like Riley Jackson, Karson Ferguson and Devan Hair will see the majority of snaps this year.

Regardless of who is on the field and who has experience, Coach Hulett can guarantee one thing: these Porcupines “are not going to be scared to hit you.”
