Coach Bobby Allison is entering his second season with the Granbury Pirates this year. Year one is always tough as we know with new faces and identities to be made. In the 2024 season, the Pirates went 1-9, with their only win against Waco in the pre-district schedules.

Granbury competes in one of the toughest districts known in Texas, the UIL 5A-1 Region 1 District 3, with powerhouses like Aledo and Denton Ryan who have 15 state championship titles between the two schools.

Allison explains that “All of that first year, even though it wasn’t successful, laid the foundation for offseason, the spring, the summer, and where we are at this point” and continues on to say “It was vital to our growth.”

The Pirates have nine defensive starters returning, with players like Bryson Hager who Allison plans his plays around by “having a flexible scheme that’s flexible but allows kids like him to line up, play fast, and do what they do best.”

However, offensively Granbury only has three returners, running back Spencer Taylor who rushed for 289 yards last season, offensive line Brooks Meyer, and other offensive line Cody Tribbel. Allison prides his offensive line as he says “it all starts with those big boys up front” and continues to say that they are “what makes everything go.”

With that the Pirates have lots of positions opening up. One player that will fill a starting position is sophomore tight end Brayden Pugh who Allison explains as a “big kid that is dynamic and we can move around.”

Allison says goal setting is super important to the Pirates, but claims that the goal is not the most important step, but what needs to be done in order to achieve that goal. The goal this season is to make the playoffs and specifically make it to the well known Thanksgiving week game that everyone in Texas wants to be a part of.

Stay tuned on NTX Varsity Sports to see if the Granbury Pirates achieve their goal for the 2024 season.
