MALAKOFF, Texas — The quest for a third straight trip to the state championship game is underway, and Malakoff started the 2025 season in solid fashion.
The No. 6-ranked Tigers opened with a 33-14 win Friday at West Rusk. Senior running back Jerrion Hall, who entered the year with more than 2,200 career rushing yards, led an efficient offensive effort that helped Malakoff overcome an early deficit.
West Rusk held a 14-7 lead in the first half before the Tigers settled in and pulled away.
Malakoff will play its home opener Friday against Lorena, which dropped its season opener to Austin Regents, 55-48. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
In volleyball, the Lady Tigers carried a 17-4 record into the final day of the Athens Tournament on Saturday. They also picked up a four-set win Friday over Rice in a non-tournament match. Malakoff will travel Tuesday to face Frankston.
The Tigers’ cross country teams competed Friday at the Slocum Invitational.
