SPRINGTOWN, Texas — The Springtown Porcupines put on a Halloween spectacle Friday night, defeating the Decatur Eagles 63–36 to clinch the District 6-4A championship and cap an undefeated district season. The win marked Head Coach Brian Hulett’s 99th career victory at Springtown, solidifying his place as the winningest coach in program history.
“It’s good for the kids and good for the community,” Hulett said after the game. “We hadn’t had to play a full game in a while, so it was good to see us do that tonight. We made some plays and really pleased with the night.”
First Half: A Shootout From the Start
The first quarter was a flurry of offense on both sides. Decatur’s Rhys Ragan (#13) opened the scoring with a short touchdown pass to Jake Milligan (#2) before Anthony Weeks (#19) added the extra point for a 7–0 lead. Springtown answered immediately behind junior quarterback Kaine Hill (#7), who found Christian Mendoza (#5) on a short route before keeping the ball himself for a 12-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7–7.
Decatur regained momentum when Ragan connected with Chase Berg (#1) for a 50-yard score, putting the Eagles ahead 14–7. But Springtown’s balanced attack struck back quickly. Hill led a 65-yard drive capped by another keeper, tying the game at 14 late in the first quarter.
Springtown’s defense came alive soon after, sacking Ragan on third down to force a punt. On the next series, Hill launched a deep pass to Karson Ferguson (#15) to move into scoring range, then hit Mendoza again to set up a short touchdown run. By the end of the quarter, Springtown had taken its first lead, 21–14.
In the second quarter, the Porcupines began to separate. Hill engineered a 70-yard drive, mixing short passes and option runs with Jon Anthony Lardizabal (#2). Lardizabal powered through the defense for a seven-yard touchdown, extending Springtown’s lead to 28–14.
Decatur cut the deficit to 28–17 with a field goal from Weeks, but Hill and the Porcupine offense refused to slow down. He connected with Riley Jackson (#6) and Omar Hernandez (#8) on key completions, then handed off to Lardizabal for another touchdown run from the 15-yard line.
Decatur responded again before halftime when Ragan hit Berg on a deep post route for a 42-yard touchdown, trimming the margin to 35–24. By halftime, Springtown held a narrow 35–30 advantage after a late Decatur score, setting the stage for a second-half explosion.
Second Half: Hill Dominates, Porcupines Pull Away
Springtown opened the third quarter with the ball and never looked back. Hill used a mix of read options and short strikes to Mendoza and Lardizabal before keeping the ball for a one-yard touchdown run, putting the Porcupines ahead 42–30.
On Decatur’s next possession, Ragan was sacked and fumbled, recovered by Wyatt Adams (#52), giving the Porcupines the ball deep in Eagle territory. Hill quickly capitalized, hitting Mendoza on back-to-back completions and then keeping the ball again for his fourth rushing touchdown of the night to make it 49–30 with 7:07 left in the third.
Decatur refused to go quietly. Ragan threw a trick-play touchdown as Mendoza (#5) took a lateral and found Robert Lewis (#3) in the end zone for six, narrowing the deficit to 49–36. But the Porcupines immediately answered.
Hill’s rhythm never faltered, leading a rapid two-minute drive capped by a 56-yard bomb to Mendoza, stretching the lead to 56–36 early in the fourth. On Decatur’s next drive, Zane Morton (#25) came up with a clutch interception that set up Hill’s final strike, a 40-yard touchdown pass to Mendoza, sealing the game at 63–36 with 11:04 to play.
Hill finished the night with five total touchdowns, three passing and two rushing, while throwing for 295 yards and rushing for 78 yards on the ground. Mendoza was his top target, hauling in eight catches for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Lardizabal added 92 rushing yards and two scores.
For Decatur, Ragan finished with 275 passing yards, four total touchdowns, and two turnovers. Berg led the receivers with six receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns, while Milligan rushed for 68 yards and added a receiving score.
Coach and Player Reflections
After the final whistle, Hill credited his versatility and the team’s preparation.
“We just really work on stuff like that,” he said. “For me to be able to use my legs, I think it really helps us.”
As for what’s next, Hill remained focused: “I’m feeling confident. Just healing up and getting ready for whatever we’ve got.”
Coach Hulett echoed the sentiment. “We can clean up a lot,” he said. “We made mistakes tonight, but now we get a bye week and a chance to get better before the playoffs.”
