ENNIS, Texas — Ennis is one half away from clinching a playoff berth after a dominant first-half performance Thursday night against district rival Corsicana. The Lions led 28-7 at halftime in a must-win District 6-5A Division II game.
Quarterback Chris Martinez (#8) guided the Ennis offense with poise, totaling more than 100 combined passing and rushing yards and scoring twice on the ground. Running back Wenderius Jones (#5) added about 60 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 2-yard score late in the first quarter to give the Lions a 14-7 lead.
Corsicana struck early when quarterback Kevin Pointer Jr. (#2) connected with CJ Davis (#4) for the Tigers’ only touchdown, tying the game at 7 with 7:35 left in the opening quarter. Pointer completed roughly five of 12 passes for about 75 yards in the half, while Mark Brown (#7) and Kenan Murphy (#0) combined for around 50 rushing yards.
After Corsicana missed a 39-yard field goal attempt by Giancarlo Zuniga (#15) in the second quarter, momentum shifted firmly to Ennis. Martinez led a methodical drive capped by an 11-yard keeper to extend the lead to 21-7. Moments later, Ennis linebacker Damion Baizar (#11) sacked Pointer and forced a fumble that was recovered and returned for a touchdown, pushing the score to 28-7 with under two minutes before halftime.
Corsicana showed signs of life before the break. Pointer hit Drake Petty (#14) for a 40-yard gain that set up first-and-goal inside the 10. But three incompletions and a false start penalty ended the Tigers’ drive as time expired.
At halftime, Ennis held a commanding 28-7 advantage. Corsicana (5-4, 3-3) must not only win but do so by at least eight points to claim the district’s final playoff spot. Ennis (5-4, 4-2) can secure postseason qualification with a victory.
