The No. 1-ranked Aledo Bearcats began their pursuit of a 13th state championship in resounding fashion Thursday night, overpowering Saginaw 80-12 in the Class 5A Division I Region I bi-district round at Tim Buchanan Stadium. The game aired on 92.1 Hank FM.
Aledo extended one of Texas high school football’s most remarkable streaks, winning its opening playoff game for the 30th consecutive season. The Bearcats piled up 676 total yards of offense, including a likely school-record 463 rushing yards.
With the win, Aledo advances to the area round next Friday, where it will face the winner of Friday night’s Amarillo Tascosa–El Paso Parkland matchup in the Panhandle.
On the volleyball court, the No. 1 Lady Cats are back in the Class 5A Division I state semifinals for the second straight year, and a marquee showdown awaits. Aledo (41-3) will take on No. 8 Highland Park (41-8) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Prosper Rock Hill High School.
The Lady Cats survived a tough test from Amarillo in last Friday’s regional semifinals before sweeping Birdville on Tuesday to claim the Region I championship. A berth in the state title match is on the line.
