Bridgeport girls basketball turned in an impressive performance at the Ponder tournament, posting a 4-1 record over the three-day event from Thursday through Saturday. The Sissies collected wins over Whitesboro, Celina, S&S Consolidated and Collinsville, all by at least 14 points, with one victory decided by a 50-point margin. Their only loss came in a tight 42-38 matchup against Clarendon.
Now 6-2 through the first two weeks of the season, head coach Darren Shearmire’s squad is showing encouraging balance. Four players are averaging double figures, and none of them are seniors, a promising sign for both the present and future of the program.
The Sissies will spread out their Thanksgiving week schedule, hosting Ponder on Tuesday before traveling to Nocona on Saturday.
On the boys side, the Bulls opened their season with a 76-52 win over Bowie behind 22 points from sophomore guard Julius Johnson, who led four players in double figures. Bridgeport then dropped a close 56-53 overtime contest to Holliday, moving to 1-1 on the year. The Bulls are idle during Thanksgiving week.
