Malakoff entered the fourth quarter within reach, trailing Pottsboro just 28-21, but the Cardinals’ explosive offense proved overwhelming down the stretch in a 49-21 loss Friday in the Class 3A Division I Region II area playoffs in Greenville.
Pottsboro delivered a decisive three-touchdown surge in the final period, ending the Tigers’ bid for a third consecutive trip to the state semifinals. Malakoff, a two-time state finalist and former state champion, closes the 2025 season at 8-4.
Running back Jerrion Hall continued his standout postseason with two touchdowns, but the Tigers struggled defensively. Pottsboro piled up 485 total yards, led by running back Cayden Humphrey’s dominant 231-yard, four-touchdown performance.
Despite the early exit, this was a new-look Malakoff squad in 2025, one that bounced back after a difficult non-district stretch and pushed its way into the area round. A full wrap-up of the Tigers’ season will come next week.
