It was a full and productive week for Weatherford basketball as the Roos navigated back-to-back tournaments and continued to establish themselves as a contender heading into the holiday break.
A week ago, Weatherford wrapped up play at the Granbury Tournament. This past weekend, the Roos turned around and hosted their own Shottenkirk Classic, facing a demanding slate across two events. Combined, Weatherford went 3-3 over that stretch, but more importantly, posted a strong 3-1 mark in its home tournament.
The Roos picked up quality wins over Hillcrest out of Dallas, Nolan Catholic and All Saints, showcasing their ability to compete against a variety of styles. The lone loss during the Shottenkirk Classic came against Richland in a tightly contested matchup. Under head coach Neal Welch, Weatherford now stands at 10-4 on the season, continuing to show balance, depth and adaptability on both ends of the floor.
Before breaking for Christmas, the Roos will play two more non-district games this week. Weatherford returns home Tuesday to face Arlington Heights before closing out the pre-holiday schedule Friday on the road at Grapevine.
On the girls side, the Lady Roos remain in the thick of the District 3-6A race as December district play continues. Weatherford enters the week at 13-3 overall, coming off a narrow 44-42 loss at Saginaw Boswell in its district opener last Friday. Despite the setback, the Lady Roos have already shown their potential in district action after cruising past Abilene 53-24 a week earlier.
The Lady Roos will be tested again this week with a pair of road district games. Weatherford travels to Mansfield on Tuesday and then heads to Crowley on Friday, looking to gain traction before the holiday break.
Elsewhere in the athletic department, Weatherford wrestling remains active as well. The Roos are scheduled to compete Tuesday at Arlington Lamar, continuing preparations for the heart of the winter season.
With both basketball programs logging valuable experience against strong competition, Weatherford heads into the final week before Christmas with momentum, confidence and plenty to build on heading into the new year.
