Lady Pirate basketball opened District 5-5A play in strong fashion last Friday, edging Keller Fossil Ridge 51-48 in a statement win to begin league action.

The victory pushed Granbury to 8-10 overall and continued a season-long trend of close, hard-fought games. Through 18 contests, eight of the Lady Pirates’ games have been decided by five points or fewer, highlighting both their resilience and ability to execute in pressure moments.

District play continues Tuesday with a road test at Saginaw before Granbury takes advantage of the first of its two district byes on Friday. The Lady Pirates will use the open date to travel to Lipan, keeping game rhythm while navigating a condensed district schedule.

On the boys side, Pirate basketball has shifted into a holiday-style slate this week. Granbury played host to Richland on Monday before returning home Thursday to face Abilene Wylie. It has been a challenging start to the season for head coach Jeremy McFerrin’s program, which currently sits at 2-11.

Despite the record, there have been flashes of progress. The Pirates’ signature moment so far came at the conclusion of last week’s Granbury tournament, when they knocked off Class 6A Weatherford 51-44. The upset provided a confidence boost and served as proof that Granbury can compete when execution and effort align.

Beyond the court, Granbury athletics is also awaiting clarity on its future classification. At some point this month, the University Interscholastic League is expected to release its official cutoff numbers for the next realignment cycle. Granbury submitted a snapshot enrollment of 2,264 students, placing the school squarely on the bubble between Class 5A and Class 6A.

Whether the Pirates remain in 5A or move up a classification remains to be seen, but the decision could have wide-reaching implications across all sports programs.

For now, the focus remains on steady improvement and navigating district play. With Lady Pirate basketball off to a promising league start and the boys showing signs of growth, Granbury heads into the heart of winter competition with momentum building in key areas and important questions awaiting answers.
