Mildred’s basketball programs continue to show positive signs as district play ramps up, with the Lady Eagles finding their footing in league action and the Eagles putting together an impressive start to the season.
The Lady Eagles are wrapping up play this week at the Kiwanis Tournament at Navarro College in Corsicana. The tournament began Monday and concludes Wednesday, giving Mildred another opportunity to sharpen its game before a key stretch in district competition. The Lady Eagles entered the tournament with an 8-8 overall record, but the number that matters most right now is their 2-0 start in District 18-2A.
Mildred opened district play with a dramatic 53-49 overtime victory over Kerens. The Lady Eagles showed resilience in that matchup, rallying from a nine-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to force overtime before pulling away. They followed that effort with a more decisive showing, topping Dawson 53-36 to remain unbeaten in league play.
District competition continues Friday with a challenging road test against state-ranked Frost, a game that will provide an early measuring stick for the Lady Eagles as the district race unfolds.
On the boys’ side, the Eagles are off to a strong start at 11-3 overall. Mildred did not participate in a holiday tournament this week and instead played a single game Tuesday against Snook. Before the UIL-mandated Christmas break, the Eagles closed out non-district play in convincing fashion with a pair of wins, defeating Riesel 53-35 and Elkhart 62-33.
Those victories highlighted the Eagles’ ability to control games on both ends of the floor as they prepare for district action. Like the girls, the Mildred boys will open District 18-2A play Friday with a matchup against Frost, making it a busy and important night for the program.
With both teams trending upward, Mildred basketball appears well-positioned as district play begins in earnest, setting the stage for an exciting stretch of the season.
