What had long been expected is now official: Aledo will move up to Class 6A following the latest UIL realignment cycle.

With an enrollment of 2,404 students, Aledo cleared the newly established Class 6A cutoff with room to spare. The UIL set the 6A enrollment floor at 2,215, making the Bearcats one of the programs firmly positioned in the state’s largest classification moving forward.

The move carries significant implications across all Aledo athletic programs. Unlike Class 5A, where football competed in a separate district from the school’s other sports, all Bearcat programs will now share the same district alignment in Class 6A. The UIL is scheduled to announce official district assignments Feb. 2.

For football, early scheduling plans are already taking shape. There are tentative arrangements for Aledo to continue its high-profile series with Denton Ryan, a matchup that has become one of the marquee rivalries in Texas high school football. That game is expected to serve as the Bearcats’ season opener, regardless of district placement.

While the realignment announcement looms, winter sports continue to move forward. The 13th-ranked Lady Bearcats basketball team recently wrapped up play at the Sandra Meadows Classic in Duncanville. Aledo entered the tournament with a 12-5 record, using the event to prepare for the heart of the district schedule.

On the boys’ side, the Bearcats were 15-5 when they took the floor Tuesday against Argyle, continuing a strong non-district showing ahead of league play.

Both the Aledo boys and girls basketball teams return to District 5-5A action Tuesday night at home against Keller Fossil Ridge as the final stretch before the full transition to Class 6A approaches.

With realignment decisions just weeks away, Aledo athletics stands on the brink of a new chapter, one that will place the Bearcats on the biggest stage Texas high school sports has to offer.
