It was a defining week for Cleburne’s girls basketball program, and the payoff was sole possession of first place in District 8-5A.

The Lady Jackets delivered arguably their most impressive performance in recent years Tuesday, traveling to face eighth-ranked Joshua and coming away with a 35-24 victory. They followed that statement win by taking care of business Friday at home, routing Johnson County rival Burleson, 64-23.

With the pair of wins, Cleburne improved to 16-8 overall and a perfect 5-0 in district play. The Lady Jackets will close out the first half of the district schedule this week, traveling to Mansfield Timberview on Tuesday before returning home to face Everman on Friday.

The Jackets also enjoyed a productive week, climbing back to .500 on the season. Cleburne edged Joshua on the road Tuesday, 53-51, and then defeated rival Burleson at home Friday, 45-35. The Jackets now stand at 11-11 overall and 2-1 in District 8-5A play. They will follow the same schedule as the girls this week with matchups against Timberview and Everman.

On the soccer side, the Jackets spent the weekend competing in the Ennis tournament, while the Lady Jackets were in action at the Aledo tournament.
