The Lady Pirates opened the Class 5A Division I Region I playoffs Monday night facing a formidable challenge.

Granbury, the second Division I seed out of District 5-5A, drew No. 2-ranked and defending state champion Denton Ryan in a bi-district matchup played at Keller Central High School. Entering the postseason, the Lady Pirates were considered heavy underdogs against the reigning champion.

Granbury closed the regular season last Tuesday with a 51-39 road victory over Saginaw Chisholm Trail, finishing the year 19-15 overall and 8-4 in District 5-5A. The win secured a tie for second place in the district standings and helped solidify the Lady Pirates’ playoff position.

On the boys side, the Pirates were set to conclude a difficult season Tuesday night at home against Saginaw High School, which entered the game battling for one of the final two District 5-5A playoff spots. Granbury finished the season 5-26 overall and 1-10 in district play but earned its first district win last week with a 39-37 victory at Chisholm Trail.

In soccer action, the Lady Pirates entered the week 9-5-2 overall and 2-1-2 in District 5-5A, hosting Chisholm Trail and Keller Fossil Ridge. The boys soccer team stood at 4-10-1 overall and 0-4-1 in district competition.
