Springtown baseball and softball are both competing in the next round of the postseason after opening their series Thursday.

The Lady Porcupines are in the Class 4A Division I Region I semifinals and dropped Game 1 of their best-of-three series against Amarillo West Plains, 5-4, at Abilene Christian University. Game 2 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday. Springtown must win to force a deciding third game, which would follow. The Lady Porcupines enter Friday with a 24-11 record after sweeping Big Spring in the area round last week.

Springtown baseball also opened its Class 4A Division I Region I area series Thursday, defeating Stephenville 4-0 in Godley. Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, with a potential Game 3 set for noon Saturday. The Porcupines improved to 22-7-2 after sweeping Carter-Riverside in the opening round of the playoffs last week.

In track and field, sophomore Miriam Kolb qualified for the Class 4A state meet next week in Austin after finishing second in the discus at the Region I meet last week in Lubbock.
