Springtown baseball will need to rally Friday to keep its Class 4A Division I Region I semifinal series alive against Amarillo West Plains.
The Porcupines dropped Game 1 of the best-of-three series Thursday, 5-4, at Midland Greenwood. Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, and Springtown must win to force a deciding third game. Following the opener, the Porcupines sit at 23-9-1 and are the final remaining District 7-4A team still playing. West Plains enters Friday with a 27-7 record.
The winner of the series will advance to next week’s regional final to face either Mineral Wells or Hereford.
Springtown advanced to the regional semifinals after defeating Stephenville in three games in the area round. The Porcupines won the opener 4-0, lost Game 2 by a 7-3 score and captured the deciding Game 3 with a 3-0 victory.
In track and field, sophomore Miriam Kolb competed Thursday in the discus at the UIL Class 4A state meet in Austin. Kolb finished seventh with a throw of 120 feet.
