Boyd baseball is headed back to the state semifinals for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the past four years.
The Yellow Jackets had to battle through three games to win the Class 3A Division I Region II championship against Gunter. Boyd opened the series Wednesday with a 4-0 victory before falling 8-2 in Game 2 on Thursday.
In Saturday’s decisive Game 3, Lane Beacham delivered six strong innings on the mound while the offense erupted in a 12-2 victory. Boyd improved to 36-3 with the series win.
The Yellow Jackets now advance to the state semifinals this week to face Region I champion Iowa Park. The Hawks enter the matchup with a 33-4 record. The two teams previously met in a non-district game April 11, with Boyd earning a 10-0 victory.
The best-of-three state semifinal series will be played in Graham. Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday. A deciding Game 3, if necessary, will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday.
A trip to next Friday’s state championship game is on the line, with either Huntington or London awaiting the winner.
