CLEBURNE, Texas — Now that’s the way to start a new era of Yellow Jackets football.
First-year head coach A.J. Sheppard made his debut Friday with a 24-3 victory over Corsicana at the Rock Pile. Quarterback Luke Stewart threw a pair of touchdown passes — a 10-yarder to CJ Kensley and a 12-yarder to Javari Meyer — as Cleburne opened the season on a high note.
After allowing a field goal early, the Yellow Jackets’ defense locked in and held Corsicana scoreless the rest of the way.
Next up is the oldest rivalry in Johnson County. Cleburne will travel Thursday to face Burleson at BISD Stadium in the 35th all-time meeting between the schools. The series, which began in 1976, is led by Cleburne 19-15. Burleson opened its season last week with a 45-21 victory over Centennial. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
In volleyball, the Lady Jackets earned wins last week over Alvarado and White Settlement Brewer. They will host Grandview on Tuesday.
