DECATUR, Texas — The Decatur Eagles left little doubt Friday night, overpowering Western Hills 70–7 in a dominant home performance that improved the Eagles to 5–2 overall and 4–0 in district play.

Decatur exploded for 21 points in the first quarter and added 28 more before halftime, taking a commanding 49–0 lead into the break. The Eagles continued their momentum after halftime, scoring three more touchdowns to cap off a complete team victory.

Head coach Steve Huff said the game was another step forward for a team focused on steady improvement. “For us, it’s just been a continuum of trying to get better every week, and I thought we got a little better again tonight,” Huff said. “We really liked the way our defense played — they chased the ball hard, absorbed blocks, and made plays all night.”

The defense set the tone early, forcing a turnover on downs on the Cougars’ opening drive and recovering a fumble late in the first quarter that led to another quick score. Huff said the team’s front-loaded preseason schedule, designed to challenge them early, has paid off as district play ramps up. “You don’t want to lose, but sometimes you can learn more from a loss than from a win,” he said. “We knew it was going to be tough in the preseason, but we needed to get better, and fortunately we’re progressing that way.”

The victory gives Decatur momentum heading into its bye week. “Next week is our bye week, so we’ll heal up some bangs and bruises,” Huff said. “We’ve got a couple kids out, so it’s coming at the right time.”

Western Hills, now 2–4 overall and 1–2 in district play, found positives despite the lopsided loss. Head coach Moilan said his players’ effort never wavered. “That was [Decatur] a really good, disciplined football team,” he said. “They didn’t give us much space anywhere on defense. Our kids played hard and never gave up, and we’re proud of that.”

Western Hills’ lone score came late in the third quarter on a passing touchdown from its sophomore quarterback, who Moilan said continues to show growth. “He’s just a sophomore,” he said. “He’s gotten better every game, and we’re excited to see what he does over the next two years.”

The Cougars’ secondary saw the bulk of the defensive action, as Decatur’s powerful rushing attack forced them into making key tackles throughout the night. “Our secondary made way too many tackles,” Moilan said. “They did a good job of saving a couple touchdowns when we missed up front.”

Decatur returns to play after its bye week with playoff aspirations firmly in sight, while Western Hills will look to regroup and focus on finishing strong in district competition.
