Decatur athletics could be on the verge of one of the most memorable weekends in school history, with major postseason action set for Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Lady Eagles volleyball team will play for back-to-back state titles, and the seventh in program history, when they face La Vernia in the Class 4A Division I state championship match. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Culwell Center in Garland. Decatur enters at 41-7, while La Vernia comes in at 43-9.

The Lady Eagles advanced with a sweep of Lindale in the state semifinals last Saturday at the Wilkerson-Greines Athletics Center in Fort Worth. Decatur has never lost a state championship match.

Because of weather concerns, the Eagle football team’s area-round playoff game has been moved to Saturday. Decatur will face Paris at 1 p.m. at Denison’s Munson Stadium in the Class 4A Division I Region II bracket. The Eagles are 7-3 after a dominant 63-14 win over Castleberry last Thursday, marking the fourth straight season head coach Steve Huff’s program has won its playoff opener.

Decatur finished with more than 500 yards of offense in the victory. Paris, now 7-4, advanced after upsetting Dallas Lincoln 41-15 in its bi-district matchup.

A landmark weekend awaits as both teams chase postseason glory.
