Decatur athletics has its new leader.

On Monday, the Decatur ISD school board unanimously approved the hiring of Glen Rose coach Cliff Watkins as the district’s new head football coach and athletic director.

Watkins spent the past 10 seasons at Glen Rose, where he compiled a 92-36 record and guided the Tigers to two state semifinal appearances. He built a reputation for producing prolific offenses, including one of the top passing attacks in Class 4A during the early 2020s.

Glen Rose featured a more balanced offensive approach in 2025 but still averaged 41 points per game while winning the District 4-4A championship and reaching the Class 4A Division II area round. Watkins replaces Steve Huff, who left in April to accept a position in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, the Decatur baseball season ended last week in the Class 4A Division I Region I area round. The Eagles fell to Mineral Wells in a three-game series and finished the 2026 season with a 22-9 record.
