As the 2025-26 athletics season comes to a close, Decatur athletics delivered major storylines both on and off the field.

On the field, the Lady Eagles volleyball and girls basketball programs each successfully defended their state championships from the 2024-25 season.

In November, Decatur volleyball defeated La Vernia to capture the Class 4A Division I state championship and finished the season with a 42-7 record.

Girls basketball followed with another title run, rallying in the fourth quarter and overtime to defeat Waco La Vega 58-54 in the Class 4A Division I championship game. The Lady Eagles completed the season at 37-4.

Off the field, Decatur underwent significant leadership changes. Steve Huff resigned after four seasons as head football coach and athletic director to accept a position in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Glen Rose coach Cliff Watkins was later hired to replace Huff and is currently assembling his coaching staff.

The Lady Eagles basketball program also saw a coaching change after Drew Coffman departed following four seasons to become the head coach at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. Decatur’s search for Coffman’s replacement is nearing completion.

More updates on the coaching search are expected next week.
