Graham basketball is showing signs of momentum on both sides as the calendar turns toward the heart of the winter sports season, with the Steers and Lady Blues wrapping up tournament play ahead of district action.
The Steers entered this week on an upswing and are finishing competition at the Buda Hays Tournament, located just south of Austin. The tournament opened Monday and concludes Wednesday, with Graham carrying a 9-7 record into the event. The Steers had won three of their last four games prior to the tournament, highlighted by a 57-52 victory over Vernon on Dec. 22 that underscored the team’s recent improvement.
Graham’s ability to close games has been a key factor during the late-December stretch, as the Steers continue to settle into defined roles and gain confidence ahead of the district schedule.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Blues are wrapping up play at the Aggieland Tournament in College Station. The multi-day event also began Monday and runs through Wednesday. Graham entered the tournament at 7-9, looking to regain traction after dropping four of its last five games before the Christmas break.
Prior to the holiday pause, the Lady Blues split the week of Dec. 15. Graham earned a 51-42 win over Wichita Falls Memorial but followed it with a 52-30 loss to Ballinger. With tournament play providing a final tune-up, the Lady Blues will turn their attention to District 6-4A competition, which begins Jan. 9.
Meanwhile, soccer season officially got underway Tuesday for Graham. The Lady Blues opened their schedule on the road at Abilene, while the boys’ team began its campaign against Wichita Falls Legacy.
As tournament play wraps up, Graham’s winter sports programs now shift focus toward district play, where consistency and continued growth will be key in the weeks ahead.
