GRANBURY, Texas — A rough first quarter cost Granbury in its District 3-5A opener Friday as Birdville built a 21-0 lead on two long touchdown passes and a defensive score. The Pirates fell 35-14 to drop to 1-2.

Granbury played even the rest of the way. Cooper Cumba returned a fumble for a touchdown, and quarterback Austin Reeves added a scoring pass.

The Pirates travel Thursday to face Keller Fossil Ridge in a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers are 1-2 after falling to Denton Ryan in their district opener. KHITS 95.5 will carry the game, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. pregame show with Clayton Neville and Hayden Howerton.

In other Granbury sports, Lady Pirates volleyball is off to a 2-0 start in District 5-5A after home wins last week over Saginaw and Chisholm Trail. Granbury, now 16-17 overall, hosts No. 2 Aledo in Class 5A on Tuesday.
