There’s never an easy way for a season to end, but Krum’s overtime loss to Athens in the Class 4A Division II Region II area round Friday will linger for a while.
In a tightly matched contest at Mesquite’s Hanby Stadium, Athens edged the Bobcats 48-42 in overtime after capitalizing on a crucial Krum turnover. The Bobcats, who finish the season 10-1, had the ball first in overtime but fumbled on their opening play. Athens responded immediately with a 25-yard touchdown pass to secure the win and advance to next week’s regional semifinals.
The game was tied at 42 at the end of regulation, thanks in part to a fourth-quarter Krum rally that produced the tying score midway through the period. The Bobcats’ defense later delivered a key turnover on downs to maintain the deadlock, giving Krum a chance it ultimately couldn’t convert.
Running back Will Holland delivered a standout performance in the loss, rushing for 228 yards and three touchdowns, a fitting effort in what has been a remarkable season.
A full wrap-up of Krum’s 2025 campaign is coming next week.
