It was not the postseason run No. 7 Krum had envisioned.
The Bobcats’ hopes of a sixth state championship came to an abrupt end Friday night in the Class 4A Division II Region I area round. In a Top 10 matchup, ninth-ranked Lubbock Liberty pulled away for an 81-52 victory at Abilene Wylie High School.
Liberty controlled the game throughout, leading 41-25 at halftime and extending the margin to 63-41 after three quarters.
Krum had advanced to the area round by defeating Benbrook, 87-58, in the playoff opener last Tuesday.
Despite the early exit, the Bobcats closed another outstanding season at 29-6 overall. The run included an undefeated District 7-4A championship and a return to the postseason as one of the top programs in Class 4A.
On the diamond, Krum softball wrapped up play at the Denton High Tournament over the weekend, its final event of the nondistrict schedule. The Lady Bobcats reached as high as 11-2-2 during tournament play.
Krum baseball also competed in Denton over the weekend and stands at 5-3 early in the season.
