A Shot at an Unbeaten

Mineral Wells is one of the area’s best turnaround stories this fall. A year removed from a 4-7 season and a fourth-place district finish, the Rams have opened 2026 a perfect 3-0, and they’ll carry that confidence into their home stadium tonight. The Rams are also the first Class 4A opponent Boyd has faced this season, making this the Yellow Jackets’ biggest challenge yet by enrollment and, by record, the hottest team on their schedule.

Nobody remembers the team that beat an unbeaten in September because they were supposed to. They remember it because it changes a season. That’s the opportunity sitting in front of Boyd tonight.

Searching for the Week 1 Team

The 1-3 record tells one story, and the schedule tells another. Boyd’s three losses have come against a Jacksboro team now ranked No. 5 in Class 3A Division II, a Henrietta squad playing its best football, and a Pilot Point team that has won eight straight home games. Last week’s 63-28 loss in Pilot Point got away early, with the Bearcats up 53-21 by halftime, but the Yellow Jackets kept swinging.

The passing game, in particular, keeps producing. Boyd has thrown for 939 yards through four games, and senior Tye Withers has been the centerpiece with 386 receiving yards, a figure that has him among the leaders in all of Class 3A Division I at 96.5 yards per game. He hauled in two touchdowns at Pilot Point, while Layton Wheeler added 72 yards and a score of his own, including a 50-yard catch that showed the big-play speed this offense can lean on. Senior Aiden Young leads the team with five total touchdowns and 30 points, and linebacker Bexar Hornsby continues to anchor the defense at 10 tackles a game.

Just as important: the games that decide Boyd’s season haven’t started. Tonight and next week’s home date with Venus are the final tune-ups before District 4-3A Division I play opens, where the playoff spots get settled. Everything this team is playing for is still on the table.

Scouting the Rams

Mineral Wells has done exactly what a team trying to change its identity should do: win the games in front of it. Three games, three wins, and a home crowd that has waited a while for a season with this kind of early buzz. The Rams will be favored tonight, and they’ll be playing to keep a zero in the loss column.

That’s precisely what makes this a dangerous spot for them. Unbeaten teams in late September start protecting something. Teams with nothing to lose start playing free.

What to Watch

Start fast. Boyd has spent the past three Fridays climbing out of early holes, and stealing the first quarter on the road would change everything about how this one plays out. Watch the Withers matchup, because no defense on Boyd’s schedule has taken him away yet, and watch the ground game, which produced 260 yards in the Week 1 win over Tolar and hasn’t reached triple digits since. If the Yellow Jackets can run it even respectably, this offense has enough firepower through the air to trade scores with anybody.
