Boyd returns to Yellow Jacket Stadium tonight for its final non-district tune-up, hosting Venus before the Yellow Jackets turn their attention to district play.
The Yellow Jackets enter Friday at 1-4, but the record does not tell the entire story of an offense that has shown the ability to move the football. Boyd is averaging 343 yards per game, including more than 227 passing yards per contest, and has scored 146 points through its first five games.
Sophomore quarterback Cason Lambert has emerged as one of the central pieces of that attack, averaging 182.8 passing yards per game. Senior receiver Tye Withers leads Boyd with 409 receiving yards and an average of 81.8 yards per game, while senior running back Aiden Young has contributed 64 rushing yards per game and a team-high five touchdowns.
Boyd is coming off a 53-35 loss to Mineral Wells in a game where the Yellow Jackets threw for 198 yards and added another 100 on the ground. The offense has now scored at least 24 points in every game this season, including its 33-26 opening-night victory over Tolar.
Venus arrives in Boyd at 0-5 after opening the season against South Hills, Carter-Riverside, Trimble Tech, Bonham and Lake Worth. The Bulldogs have leaned heavily on the ground game, averaging nearly 200 rushing yards per game.
Running back Ayden Anderson leads that effort at 136 rushing yards per contest and has accounted for three rushing touchdowns.
The contrast in styles gives Friday’s matchup a clear identity. Boyd has produced much of its yardage through the air, while Venus has done its best work on the ground.
For the Yellow Jackets, the night also represents one more opportunity to sharpen a young roster before the district portion of the schedule begins.
