Lone Star Beats Aledo 56-52 in State Semis

MANSFIELD — Frisco Lone Star delivered a stunning finish Friday night, outlasting the Aledo Bearcats 56-52 in the Class 5A Division I state semifinal at Vernon Newsom Stadium and ending the Bearcats’ bid for another trip to AT&T Stadium.

The Rangers’ explosive offense proved too much to contain. Sophomore quarterback Trey Wright accounted for 575 total yards and three rushing touchdowns, while Florida signee Davian Groce torched the secondary with 15 catches for 320 yards and four scores. Lone Star finished with 683 yards of offense and eight touchdowns.

Aledo answered nearly every blow. Lincoln Tubbs was nearly flawless, completing 12 of 13 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 175 yards and a score. Kaydon Finley added nine catches for 251 yards and three touchdowns as the Bearcats leaned on balance and efficiency.

Ultimately, Lone Star’s firepower prevailed in a back-and-forth shootout, with a last-minute onside kick that Lone Star was able to recover and score a last-minute game winning touchdown. Prevailing all odds being the underdog pick with an 8% favor, handing Aledo its first loss and advancing the Rangers to the state championship game.
