MALAKOFF, Texas — It was a tough Friday night for the No. 3 Tigers, who saw a two-score lead slip away late in a 38-35 home loss to Lorena.

Malakoff led 35-21 entering the fourth quarter but gave up 17 unanswered points. The Leopards tied the game and sealed the upset on a 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds left.

The Tigers’ defense had played a key role in building the lead, forcing a third-quarter turnover that set up a touchdown. But the late rally dropped Malakoff to 1-1.

The Tigers will look to regroup Friday when they travel to Madisonville for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Mustangs are 1-1 after a 31-24 loss to Navasota.

In volleyball, the Lady Tigers are set to begin District 15-3A play this week with two home matches. They will host Mineola on Tuesday and Grand Saline on Friday after wrapping up non-district play with sweeps of Athens and Frankston last week.
