Malakoff baseball’s season came to a surprising end this past week in the opening round of the Class 3A Division I Region II playoffs.

Gladewater swept the Tigers, 10-1 and 5-0, in one of the bigger upsets of the opening round of the Class 3A postseason. Malakoff entered the playoffs as the District 15-3A champion, while Gladewater claimed the fourth playoff spot from District 16-3A with a losing district record. The Tigers finish the season with a 20-7-3 record.

At the Class 3A Region II track and field meet at Whitesboro High School, Malakoff’s Miley Dowell qualified for the UIL state meet in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump after placing second in both events. Dowell was also an area champion in the triple jump, long jump and 100 hurdles. The UIL state meet is scheduled for May 14-16 in Austin.

The Lady Tigers also finished third as a team at the area track meet two weeks ago in Overton, hosted by West Rusk.
