Weatherford Kangaroos Football 2025: The Preseason Breakdown

The Weatherford Kangaroos are looking to bounce back in the 2025 season after a tough 2–8 campaign last year. Despite their struggles, 12 Kangaroos earned All-District recognition. Unfortunately, only two of those players, offensive tackle Rhett Gray and linebacker Liam Riley, are expected to return this season due to graduation losses. That number could drop to just one, however, after Riley suffered a torn ACL over the summer, putting his season in doubt.

For head coach Aubrey Sims and the Kangaroos, the key to improvement may simply be staying healthy. Injuries plagued Weatherford last season, forcing them to play a third-string quarterback and losing their starting running back early on. However, those challenges may pay off this fall, as many underclassmen gained valuable starting experience and are now better prepared to contribute in 2025.

Although the defense may be looking to rebuild, one strong point for Weatherford should be the offense, which returns eight starters. Running back DJ Quimby is back after a season-ending injury last year and will run behind an experienced offensive line anchored by three-star recruit Rhett Gray.

“I think our offensive line will be a strength of ours this year,” Sims said.

With a quarterback battle still underway, whoever wins the job would be wise to look often for speedy junior wide receiver Jakob Hemphill, who’s poised for a breakout season after catching 24 passes last year.

The Kangaroos dropped three games last season by 10 points or fewer, so if they hope to compete for a playoff spot this year, capitalizing on those close matchups will be crucial.
