WEATHERFORD, Texas — A game-saving special teams play and a dominant rushing performance carried Weatherford to its first win of the season Friday, a 42-41 victory over Azle.

The Hornets scored late to pull within a point, but the Roos blocked the extra point attempt to preserve the lead and seal the win.

Running back DJ Quimby powered the Weatherford offense, rushing for 326 yards and two touchdowns, including a 66-yard breakaway. Quimby, who missed the 2024 season with an injury, helped the Roos build a lead they surrendered early in the fourth quarter before quickly reclaiming it.

The victory evened Weatherford’s record at 1-1. The Roos will travel Friday to face Arlington High at UTA’s Maverick Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Colts, also 1-0, had their opener at Flower Mound Marcus halted by weather and ruled a no-contest despite holding a 7-0 lead at the time.

In volleyball, District 3-6A play begins this week for the Lady Roos. Weatherford, now 15-9, will play at Mansfield Legacy on Tuesday and at Saginaw Boswell on Friday.
