Weatherford athletics has learned its district destination for the next two years following the University Interscholastic League’s biannual realignment announced Feb. 2. The Kangaroos will remain at the Class 6A level for all sports.

Weatherford will compete in District 3-6A in Region I, an eight-team district that includes Aledo, Granbury and five Arlington schools: Arlington High, Bowie, Lamar, Martin and Sam Houston. While it was widely expected that Weatherford, Aledo and Granbury would be grouped together, the addition of the Arlington schools drew attention.

The alignment is not unfamiliar territory for Weatherford. Historically, the Kangaroos have shared district play with Arlington ISD programs. There was also relief locally that Weatherford was not placed in a westward district, as some projections had paired the Roos with Midland and Odessa schools.

Head coach Aubrey Sims’ football program will play a three-game non-district schedule against Burleson Centennial, Azle and Fort Worth Paschal.

Basketball and soccer updates will be provided next week.
